Before Selah: A Day in Her Life
by Jennifer Comeaux, Director of Mission Strategy & Development
She wakes up in a room she doesn’t recognize. She is exhausted, hurting, and afraid. Her stomach is empty. Her phone lights up with messages from names she doesn’t know and appointments made for her. No one asks, “How is your heart?” There are no words of care, no prayers spoken over her, just expectations. Just survival.
She’s dropped off again. Another “date.” Another hour to survive. She doesn’t flinch anymore. She’s learned to go numb to turn off her tears, voice, and hope. The outcome is predictable. Silence at best. Violence at its worst.
This isn’t just a bad day.
This is every day.
At Selah: A Day Toward Healing
She wakes up in a quiet room, sunlight peeking through the blinds. There’s no lock on the door, but for the first time, she feels safe staying.
A staff member greets her gently by name and asks if she’s had breakfast. There is no demand, no threat, just care.
She’s not expected to talk. Just to rest. T o breathe. T o begin again.
By lunchtime, she joins other women around the table. There’s laughter from the kitchen. No one asks for anything in return. For the first time, her body isn’t being used. Her story isn’t hidden; it’s honored.
She is seen.
She is safe.
She is sacred.
The impact of stabilization is sacred and lasting.
When a woman enters into safety under God’s covering, her nervous system begins to calm, and her heart slowly opens to trust again. Over time, fear no longer drives her decisions. Trauma loses its control. She begins to engage in healing relationships, participate in care with openness, and rediscover her voice.
God meets her in the stillness.
Shame is replaced by dignity.
Despair is exchanged for hope.
And the truth of who she is begins to take root.
Beloved, chosen, redeemed.
Be Part of Her Restoration
This work doesn’t happen alone. It takes a community praying, giving, and standing together to create a refuge where women can begin again.
As you consider how God might be calling you to respond, we invite you to pray with us for the women waking up in fear at this very moment.
A Prayer for the Woman Who Woke Up in Fear
Lord Jesus,
Today, she woke up in a place not her own.
She carries more fear than belongings. More shame than peace.
But you see her. You have always seen her.
You saw the child before the pain.
You saw her tears long before anyone else.
And today, you are near.
So we ask
Bring rest where there was torment.
Bring safety where there was survival.
Wrap her in Your covering.
Surround her with Your angels.
Speak gently to her heart:
“You are mine.”
Make a way, Lord, where there was no way.
You are her strong tower. You are her hiding place.
Let her know that she is not forgotten.
She is not discarded.
She is deeply loved.
In Jesus name,
Amen.
Your generosity helps make this prayer a reality.
It creates a place where women are no longer exploited but restored under the covering of God’s love.
Will you help build that space today?
Thank you for standing in the gap between what was and what can be.
With hope and gratitude,
Jennifer Comeaux, Director of Mission Strategy & Development
